Archaic Spider-Man Reviews: Number 60

Woo, ok everyone, it's the one you've been waiting for! Amazing Spider-Man #600!
*Max whispers in my ear*
Woo, ok everyone, it's the one you've probably not been waiting for! Astonishing Spider-Man #60!
Ahh, coincidences. Anyhoo, Back in Black continues this week, as Peter confronts the man who shot Aunt May, rounds up dozens more copycats and then... doesn't do much in the third slot, really.

Oh well, let's power through. Hit the jump!

First slot is the second part of Back in Black. Aunt May is in a coma, and there's nothing Peter can do. That is, there's nothing useful he can do, so he's carrying on under the pretence that he is going to actually kill someone. Peter may believe it, as may JMS, but I really don't - it's such a played out cliché of superhero writing. These days, righteous superheroes with strict moral codes seem to be having little 'lapses' every other issue just to give a bit of narrative tension. Will the hero cross the line and become a killer? Of course they won't; a bit of deus ex machina in the final issue of the arc, and they're back where they were, and stronger for the experience. Bleugh.

I'll admit that Peter is being pretty badass; kicking ass, taking names and even throwing a guy out of a high rise. Wait a minute...

Did... did Spidey just stop a guy from falling by webbing his foot? That is exactly what he did to Gwen! Don't give me that 'she was already dead from shock' spiel, there was a snap sound effect right by her neck. This guy should be dead from the Gwen Stacey effect (or whiplash, to be more technical). This is a flippin' pretty page though, as Max might put it, although the perspective seems wrong on the building to the right, like it's been shoe-horned in.

Regardless, Spidey manages to track down the Martino, the sniper to a train station. He zeroes in on the guy by... standing in the middle of the station and waiting for the ol' Spider-sense to flare up when he is spotted by the sniper. This is slightly ridiculous of course, but it's also very cool, and a good reminder of why I like JMS; he's very good at finding new angles on superheroes powers, just like this. Spidey beats several shades of it out of the sniper, but before he can kill him *snigger* another gunman opens fire and hits Martino, who is rushed to the same hospital as May before dying. This is pretty ironic, but it is weakened by Peter actually pointing out the symmetry, several times. JMS, good writing isn't quite as effective when you wave it in the reader's face and yell 'I AM CLEVER'.

The issue ends with Peter finding out that Wilson Fisk put the hit out on him, and is therefore culpable for Aunt May's injuries. Peter tells Fisk to die, but I really hope he takes a less passive approach than telling his enemy to die next issue, it's a bit lazy. Seriously though, how likely is it that Peter will not just kill, but kill a character as major as the Kingpin? I'd put the odds at about 1000:1, which is about the same as the odds anyone will leave a comment to this review. I'm not bitter though. Really.

Slot two this week is slot 3 last time: The second part of The Strange Case of... With the now revealed presence of Calvin Zabo (Aka Mister Hyde) the strange name is now not QUITE as strange; but as a student of literature I feel compelled to point out that the name of the book being referenced is Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde: there is no 'The'.

If I'm done being annoying, let's review this thing and go home. Peter is rounding up the copycats, several of whom are experiencing more mutations, and all of whom were in circumstances somewhat like Peter's when he was first starting out. This is interesting enough, but things really start getting weird when the cops are dealing with these doppelgängers. The tired, droopy detective has liver spots, a bedraggled appearance and a constant supply of coffee from his (black) whipping boy, Silas. This is just bizarre; but the icing on the cake is what they're looking at.

HAH? What?

Is that guy hulking out? Why is the guy on the ceiling? The shiny guy on the right is wearing a leather jacket OVER his costume, and his hair is coming through the mask; or is that a wig? Why are they all in the same cell? It's not that this is badly drawn or even unexplained. It's just a truly bizarre tableaux. Even though they are masked I imagine each Spidey with a fixed deranged expression as they pose improbably like retarded children. I really hope it's not just me who find this a little bit freaky.

I might have nightmares over that. Anyway, the perps go on about liking being Spider-men because it gives them a chance at a new life; presumably they missed the bit about hideous mutations and death. While this is going on, Zabo watches his 'control subject' try and break out of a weird cell that is modelled like a teen's room. I'll have more to say on this later. Peter meets Reed Richards (why is Peter meeting Reed Richards?) and we discover that Zabo has been tagging his experiments. Back to Zabo, where all is revealed: he is confused as to why a teen granted the powers of Spider-Man would chose to do good. As such, he is running a bizarre experiment in which he takes teens, mutates them and sets them loose to see if they turn to crime or heroics. As someone with a basic understanding of the scientific method, I want to point out that Zabo is insane, but he's not stupid. Even if we buy his motivation of curiosity, his 'control subject' is useless as a control and therefore has no purpose, and this experiment is the most unscientific... Actually, forget it. Spider-Man climbs walls, swings off buildings and has a precognitive danger sense, so calling this science dumb would be hypocrisy, in view of all the messed up comic book science there is.

I guess I'm looking forward to the finale, if only because I'm getting itchy waiting for a proper super-fight, since this was a very action light AstonSpid in general.

Whew, final slot. This week we have a new arc starting, Sandblasted

Sandman is breaking into Riker's, and he seems to swallow a guard whole. Pretty badass really. While he's kicking ass, Spidey dicks about with a helicopter for four pages in what we reviewers call 'filler' Back to the awesome: Sandman is thwarted by... water guns? LAME! He manages to escape without the guy he came for, and drifts apart in the water...

Wow, that's actually damn good. I could make a snarky comment on the fact there's a random shower which has drains feeding right to the sea (pretty good entry point for, say, Hydro-Man) but instead I'll just say that this art is pretty.

Peter has been posing as Ben Ulrich, working as Flash Thompson's deputy and using a holographic doohicky to change his appearance. It's a good thing the art isn't bad, because this is a silly concept. Ben Ulrich is still around, working at Frontline, so posing as him wouldn't work; and why would Peter choose to work under Flash, as assistant coach? He always hated sports. Obviously this disguise is bad, because Flash works out it's Peter and offers him a place to crash. When Peter has gone, however, Flash makes a mysterious phone call. Is the guy who used to make Peter's life hell going to make Peter's life hell? How... unexpected.

Instead of sleeping, Peter does the usual moping over a photo of Uncle Ben, but he's confronted by Sandman, who asks Spidey for help springing his dad out of Riker's – but this is the weird bit. Sandman sees the picture of Ben and declares that this man is the person his father is accused of killing about a month ago. Wait, what? Ben died years ago... Wait a minute, is this a callback to Jumping the Tracks? That was a time travelling mind-fuck which ended with an alternate universe version of Ben running around, but that ran ages ago... What the deuce is going on here?

I guess I'll have to wait till next issue to find out/take the piss.

Well, that was AstonSpid numbah 60. Next Issue, Spidey goes after the Kingpin for ordering the attack on his family, faces down Mister Hyde and, hopefully, works out how the heck Uncle Ben was around to get shot. Till then, g'night.

NEW STYLE Quick-Fire Reviews: Week of 15th July Part 2

*sigh*

.... I suppose I SHOULD. After all once I'm caught up I can reward myself with something I actually WANT to do, like the FTP text review for the week, or editing that goddamn video review together. Still, I hate playing catch-up. I especially hate it when it's this week of the month, where EVERYTHING decides to come out... Well by that I mean last week and.. GAH I HATE THIS!

JUST HIT THE JUMP AND MAYBE I'LL THROW IN A SOUND CLIP OF ME CRYING LIKE A BITCH!

FRANKLIN RICHARDS SCHOOL'S OUT ONE SHOT by Chris Eliopoulos
Flippin' Moments (most comics have 5): 1
Spotlight Fli- oh just one okay then: Franklin Richards trying to stop the rain and only succeeding just before he has to go to dinner. Kinda funny.Art: It's okay, stylised. Like a poor man's Peanuts. A VERY poor man's Peanuts.
Writing: Humour's aimed at kids but I can't imagine them finding any of the strips funny outside of the one moment I've highlighted. Wow I just removed any need for anyone to buy this comic. Wow.
Downsides: IT'S REALLY FUCKING AWFUL! That's a pretty big downside.
Rating: FUCK IT!

LOCKJAW & THE PET AVENGERS #3 (OF 4) by Chris Eliopoulos and Ig Guara
Flippin' Moments: 10
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The immediate opening page, with the thrilling sight of the Pet Avengers falling out of the sky and Niels (Hairball) screaming his guts out with fear. Awesome.Art: Functional, goofy, suited to the writing. This is how art should be, fitting perfectly into the complete package and being perfect for its role.
Writing: Oh Eliopoulos CAN write! That doesn't explain Franklin Richards but still enough of me griping, let me just say that the writing here is stellar and full of brilliant laugh out loud moments. It's by no means flawless, having to establish how characters behave rapidly due to the constraints of a 4 issue miniseries, but we forgive those flaws in light of some of the best character interaction this side of Might Avengers.
Downsides: None that I can think of.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

MIGHTY AVENGERS #27 by Dan Slott, Christos Gage and Khoi Pham
Flippin' Moments: 8
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The big reveal of the Infinite Avengers Mansion, the coolest idea the avengers has had since... Well since Slott's Mighty Avengers line-up funnily enough.Art: Khoi Pham has returned, bringing with him the definitive Mighty Avengers art style that set us all up to fall in love with a title formerly plagued by tie-ins and over the top Bendis voice. Slott helped of course by being awesome but Pham is like the heart of Mighty, beating away under the surface, bringing with it emotion. MAINLY LOVE.
Writing: Slott is the champion of Avengers. Simple as. Gage has turned up for scripting this time and in true form he generally gets the same sort of quality shining through in his dialogue. However I do look forward to any point ahead where Slott handles all writing himself, as he is the true brain of Mighty, coming up with ideas and presenting them FLAWLESSLY. Gage does well filling in for the frontal lobe though so we can forgive this.
Downsides: Again, I want Slott's full brainpower on this.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

PUNISHER #7 by PEOPLE WHO AREN'T MATT FRACTION
Flippin' Moments: 3
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Punisher's new assisstant getting pissy... Yeah that's the best... Ya know what fuck it. I don't want to tell you how awful this is. It's just that bad. It's SO FUCKING AWFUL I'll just replace the review with an image of Molly from RUNAWAYS punching Frank in the stomach. That's what you get for not being as good as Matt Fraction. I'm not bitter.
Yeah. Take that.

SKRULL KILL KREW #3 (OF 5) by Adam Felber, Mark Robinson, Mike Getty and Rob Disalvo

Flippin' Moments: 9
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The resident racist of the SKK turns out to have regenerated himself as a black man. Hilarious moment and more than a little eye-catching, especially to readers of this series or the one before it.Art: Too many cooks aside, this is al perfectly functional, with the battle scenes carrying the requisite craziness that a book like Skrull Kill Krew really needs.
Writing: Awesome. Captivating even to non-fans, pleasing to fans, whilst not being confusing to the captivated non-fans. This is how comics should be.
Downsides: Too many cooks. Wolverine. Actually he's kinda cool in this and not Wolverine.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

WAR OF KINGS WARRIORS #1 (OF 2) by Christos Gage, Mahmud A. Asrar and Carlos Magno
Flippin' Moments: Gladiator's story: 5. Blasaar's Story: 0
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: A ruthless headshot of sheer epic proportions that I'm too lazy to explain it. Hey look an image:
Yeah.
Art: Both stories have okay art, that's captivating whilst also being kinda boring in this age of detailed art that isn't that fun. That aside it's pretty and the colouring in Gladiator's story is pretty awesome.
Writing: Gage can't make Blastaar cool. He can make Gladiator epic though so we forgive him. Functional and pretty good for a couple of side-stories. Nothing to write home about.
Downsides: Bland, pointless, Blastaar sucks.
Rating: I DON'T CARE! (for the War of Kings collectors?)

X-FACTOR #46 by Peter David and Marco Santucci(?)
Flippin' Moments: 7
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Darwin doing his whole 'don't call me Armando' schtick. Never gets old. Especially as this time he's hitting Monet at the same time (and not in the way he'd prefer!).Art: Functional, and confusing. Mainly because It says De Landro on the cover and Marco Santucci inside. So I give up. It's X-Factor art, meaning the artist will be gone soon enough and replaced by someone else, making for inconsistencies and pain. Until then it's fine and actually pretty awesome.
Writing: Peter David may be a Liefeld antagoniser but that's not the reason I love reading his comics. No it's also because he writes great stories. This is no exception and a perfect step in the lead-up to the conclusion of this year long arc in issue 50.
Downsides: Any sense of a cliffhanger this issue is non-existant. Or lame. I can't tell.
Rating: Buy It!

Okay I'm all caught up. FTP text review soon enough, top ten writers up saturday with this week's quick-fire. I'm tired now.

Thoughts On: October Solicits (Marvel)

Ah, solicits. No need for me to rush addressing you. You'll still be far away in a week's time. But I'm feeling nice and you've been ever so kind as to include another cover for Nomad: Girl Without A World, my precious obsession.

With that in mind let's dive into the best and worst solicits released by Marvel for October 2009!

MARVEL

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #608-610

What's In It?: “WHO WAS BEN REILLY?”, an arc that focuses on Raptor (a new character who thinks Ben Reilly killed his family) trying to get revenge on the Scarlet Spider. Except the only lead he has is his perfect lookalike PETER PARKER.
Will It Be Good?: Marc Guggenheim is on it, so I have a decent amount of faith in it. However the lead-in annual was a pile of arse. Ben Reilly was best left as an infamous part of Marvel's history.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS: ANTI-VENOM - NEW WAYS TO LIVE #2 (OF 3)

What's In It?: Anti-Venom, perhaps the best symbiotic-thingy outside of Toxin doing that typical "anti-hero waging one-man war against those who have sinned" and such. Difference is this is awesome and fresh just for being Anti-Venom! Oh and The Punisher drops in because he is also an anti-hero and we can't just have a tiny three issue mini focus on the main character and developing him. No that would be TOO WISE!
Will It Be Good?: Yes. Look at the SIZE of that title! The ridiculous nature of that alone guarantees awesomeness! Oh and Zeb Wells, a writer I'm growing more fond of with each issue of New Mutants.

ASTONISHING X-MEN #31

What's In It?: A new arc by Warren Ellis! Agent Brand in a sticky situation involving exploding asteroids and hurtling towards earth! Of course this has to involve the X-Men at some point else Ms. Brand would have taken over the comic long ago. As such they are called into action to help her. Nice.
Will It Be Good?: Warren Ellis rarely lets me down. Even when he completely changed a classic series like Thunderbolts it worked out okay. As such this SHOULD be good. That and Armour on the cover (another of my many 'favourite X-Men') means we'll have one solid element.

BLACK PANTHER #9

What's In It?: More of the most innovative reinvention of the Black Panther since... Well.. Ever I suppose. "POWER" part 3 takes the new Black Panther and puts her up against a super-villain I've never heard of called Predator. I thought it'd be a weird alien who fights aliens or a mutant eating monster, but apparently it's a woman with a whip or something. Whatever. Oh and T'challa is still there on some sort of journey. So he's alive still I think.
Will It Be Good?: Probably. Maberry (the writer) is fresh to the series with this arc and I have no experience of the writer. However this new Black Panther has been consistently good from the get-go so we can assume that Marvel have been careful to uphold such quality.

CABLE #19

What Is It?: “QUEEN CAPTURES BISHOP” Blah Blah Bishop Blah Blah Hates Hope, Blah Blah Cable, Blah Blah NUCLEAR BOMB?! Bishop now has a bomb in his arm so he can kill himself to kill Hope. Man, dude's serious. But then he's pretty sure he's a good guy. Heck at least if he kills Cable (another mutant I like) this horrid series will end. Oh and THE BROOD QUEEN! I was pretty sure all the brood died out when No-Name of World War Hulk fame died. Fuck it I don't care.
Will It Be Good?: NO. Unless Gabriel Guzman is a fucking AMAZING artist this will be a poorly written story with no redeeming features. Swierczynski killed Immortal Iron Fist and now he's driving his OWN SHITTY SERIES INTO THE GROUND!
I checked, he's a pretty good artist. It might be readable.

DARK AVENGERS: ARES #1 (OF 3)

What Is It?: A mini about Ares training agents of HAMMER by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Cary Nord. There might be more to it than that but fuck it that's close enough.
Will It Be Good?: Possibly. Gillen did good work on Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter (kinda) and Nord impressed the shit out of me with Secret Invasion: X-Men, so I'm quietly optimistic about them both handling one of the easiest characters to write in the entire Marvel U.

DARK REIGN: THE LIST: SECRET WARRIORS, PUNISHER, HULK & WOLVERINE

What Are They?: The List is Marvel's answer to "Will Dark Reign ever end?!", supplying a series of interconnected one-shots where in Norman Osborn will try and deal with something related to the Titular characters. So Secret Warriors is taking down Nick Fury, Punisher is taking down the Punisher, Hulk features him trying to deal with... Skaar I THINK, it isn't clear and Wolverine has him dealing with Weapon Plus. Well, wanting to control it. WHICH MEANS WE GET MORE FANTOMEX! WOO!
Will They Be Good?: Yes, No, Yes and Maybe respectively. The Punisher's crusade against Osborn has been bland and that won't change. Everything else however is pretty awesome, between staff and plot. Wolverine is the closest to a guarantee from me, followed by Hulk (unless RULK pays a visit).

DEADPOOL #900

What Is It?: A lie. A brilliant and hilarious lie just to take a jab at some DC comic reaching issue 900 soon. 104 pages, so on so forth.
Will It Be Good?: Probably not. Deadpool isn't funny anymore. In fact he's only really been hilarious when alongside Cable in their combined series Cable & Deadpool. However we have Van Lente lending his talent to proceedings. Oh and our favourite 'not a homophobe' Rob Liefeld (I jest, I jest. He's probably not a homophobe). Expect weird stuff. BUTT STUFF. Ya know... 'cause he can't draw bums without them being large and overly accentuated... Ah sorry that was crap.

DOCTOR VOODOO: AVENGER OF THE SUPERNATURAL #1

What Is It?: Okay, I know that Brother Voodoo is a psychologist, so switching to Doctor Voodoo is fine, but why change it just because he's sorcerer supreme now? Seems kinda weird. Ah well at least we won't have Bendis dicking around with how he should be. So we have Rick Remender telling us a story all about how Jericho Drumm is spending his time as sorcerer supreme. Which is nice. Not enough known yet, let alone who's drawing it.
Will It Be Good?: Come back after SDCC when I know more. I'll get it for the first issue anyway because I know very little about the magic side of Marvel (save Avalon and Captain Britain).

SPIDER-MAN 1602 #1 (OF 5)

What Is It?: Jeff Parker handing us the final 1602 series, this time focusing on one of the better characters from the saga SPIDER-MAN! Norman Osbourne has been treacherous and sent Spider-Man back to Europe or something. I've only read the original series.
Will It Be Good?: I don't know. 1602 was brilliant but without a knowledge of the non-Gaiman spin-offs I can't be sure. Still this is the brilliant Jeff Parker we're talking about so it should be more than acceptable.

SPIDER-WOMAN #2

What Is It?: Comic version of the upcoming Motion Comic. Spider-Woman works for SWORD now and is off to Madripoor. Bendis writing, Maleev on art duties.
Will It Be Good?: Bendis writing says no, Maleev drawing says yes... I'll read the first issue when it comes out I GUESS.

WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #1

What Is It?: Another Spider-Man series which seems to just tie itself up in events happening in Amazing Spider-Man. Features Kaine (a clone guy. Fuck it) and mentions Kraven in the solicit. Kraven is awesome, so let's pretend this could be too.
Will It Be Good?: Kraven appearing in flashback form would be nice. Unless it's Kraven 2 or 3. Still 48 pages is nice. So I'm going to say... Maybe?

X-BABIES #1 (OF 4)

I'm not touching this. But aren't little Shugah and ShadowKitty adorable?

X-MEN VS. AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 (of 2)

What Is It?: Looks like this is replacing Agents of Atlas for a couple of months (with one a month in place of a bimonthly series?) and we can sit happily knowing it's a cheap excuse to raise the price a whole dollar. Still we get to have the Agents face off against the X-Men so they can borrow Cerebra (que?) which will be nice, seeing as they have a history with Wolverine.
Will It Be Good?: Yes. Jeff Parker can do no wrong with the Agents of Atlas. Though my judgement is suspect because I love X-Books too.

DARK REIGN: HAWKEYE #5 (of 5)

What Is It?: FUCKING CRAZY. If you've been following this miniseries you'd know just how completely mental it's been. It seems there must have been delays for it to only get to issue 5 in October but what the hell right? Anyway the conclusion seems to be more of Hawkeye going crazy and more of Ben Urich doing what he does best.
Will It Be Good?: HELL YES. If it's anything other than mental and awesome then Andy Diggle has REALLY fucked up.

INCREDIBLE HERCULES #136-137

What Is It?: BIMONTHLY HERCULES! HERCULES VS THOR! AMADEUS CHO DOING THINGS! NUMBERING THAT WE ALL KNOW NEVER MADE SENSE! WOO!
Will It Be Good?: It has HERCULES DRESSED AS THOR FIGHTING THOR! OF COURSE IT'LL BE FUCKING GOOD!

NOMAD: GIRL WITHOUT A WORLD #2 (OF 4)

What Is It?: My obsession. The second in a 4 issue mini by Sean McKeever about Rikki Barnes. So we get the girl who doesn't want to be Nomad trying to take on Flag Smasher, The Falcon making a guest appearance, and some student election stuff. Sounds awesome.
Will It Be Good?: Do I even know you anymore? OF COURSE IT WILL! CLASS DISMISSED!

NO WAIT COME BACK I'M NOT DONE!

ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS #3

What Is It?: Reinvention of the Ultimates. Steve Rogers has gone renegade and Hawkeye and Nick Fury are retrieving him or something and... Wait is that Wasp on the cover? Isn't she dead? And is that Black Widow? WHAT'S GOING ON?!
Will It Be Good?: I DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!

DARK AVENGERS #10

What Is It?: Shit hits the fan as Norman Osborn FINALLY loses control. We've all been waiting for this and I hope it leads to Dark Avengers ending VERY SOON!
Will It Be Good?: No. Dark Avengers has been awful all the way through, save for a mediocre Utopia chapter.

DARK WOLVERINE #79

What Is It?: The Daken ongoing continues as stuff seems to go wrong for him for some reason. Who cares about the plot? In the end it's the character who makes it interesting and he's still in it. That's all you need to know.
Will It Be Good?: Probably. Daken is an awesome character and it'd take a really bad piece of writing to ruin that.

MIGHTY AVENGERS #30

What Is It?: That whole Unspoken arc goes into high gear with nigh-on every Avengers team (Pet Avengers are busy I guess) joining in for the 30th issue of the best Avengers comic out there!
Will It Be Good?: Yes. Slott is the master of the Mighty Avengers. He knows what he's doing, even if it could end up a cluster fuck.

THUNDERBOLTS #137

What Is It?: A chance for Thunderbolts to save itself from... Itself. The original team throws down, secrets are revealed (like... who is Scourge this time?) and Diggle gets the fuck out.
Will It Be Good?: I don't know. Even with the original team coming back, Thunderbolts is so skewed that any sense of nostalgia will probably die. We need a collapse of Thunderbolts and a new numbering, a new series, a reboot of the original concept. anything but what it's become.

X-FACTOR #50

What Is It?: The comic that pisses off Liefeld fans reaches its 50th issue in style, ending a year long arc and potentially bringing everyone together again (sans Rahne). to say I'm looking forward to this is an understatement. Peter David has plans for this that could blow our ever-loving minds!
Will It Be Good?: Is there a good artist on it? Yes? Then sure.

MARVEL HOLIDAY SPECTACULAR

Why does this remind me of the WARRIOR christmas poster book Linkara and Spoony reviewed? (link included in this statement)

FINALLY! To all the solicits yet to be revealed (held back till San Diego Comic-con) or lacking cover images:
