NEW STYLE (AGAIN?!) Quick-Fire Reviews: Week of August 12th

Gotta love that cover. Ms. Marvel punching Ms. Marvel in the crotch. Groundbreaking.

So welcome to another new iteration of the Quick-Fire Reviews. I really should run a poll of what method's better if I ever have more than 5 readers. This time around I'm going for a basic and nonsensical approach:

• Say nothing about the comic
• Edit a page to kinda get across a bit of what I'm thinking
• Try to be funny
• Fail
• Rate

No complicated baloney about art or writing, that's for the full size reviews. This is a simple yay or nay version of reviews, with some added imagery for entertainment. To drop the moments stuff that I love using for the full reviews seems a shame but hey I might be able to work those in in the future.

Quick-Fire Reviews: Week of 22nd July

Oh man I gotta cut down on how much I read each week. It's getting ridiculous and it consumes a lot of time. Which makes me glad that the reviews this week are relatively light content wise (though that doesn't stop there being a LOT to review).

Highlights this week include the heartbreaking conclusion to Captain Britain and MI13 (heartbreaking that it's ending, the ending itself is quite upbeat all things considered) and the first comic Hulk-related by Jeph Loeb that not only doesn't make me physically sick but is actually a bit above average. Oh and one of my favourite DC series.

CAPTAIN BRITAIN AND MI13 #15(end) by Paul Cornell and Leonard Kirk

Flippin' Moments (most comics have 5+): 11
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The last page send-off, with a panel devoted to each character/pairing (dependant). Beautiful, impacting and a reminder of each character we won't see again simply because we all didn't buy the issues. You bastards... Including me... Damn my waiting for trades.

Art: Leonard Kirk has been the only artist I could ever imagine drawing MI13 and I'm so glad he made it to end, as this is beautiful art with next to no flaws. In fact I say next to none, it might well be none. This is art that was perfectly suited to its content.
Writing: Paul Cornell's writing will be mentioned a lot more in the coming days *cough*bestwriterstoptenconclusion*cough* but this is perhaps the best place to mention that his writing on this series has been up there with the best of the best of the best writers and that if he was on this series for another 15 issues it could have become Marvel's best written title and made him a comic writing star. For now we just have to hope that his work on DR:Young Avengers and Black Widow will help him rocket up the ranks. Stellar writing and a good pay-off to all the build up.
Downsides: FUCKING CANCELLED!

DARK WOLVERINE #76 by Daniel Way/Marjorie Liu and Giuseppe Camuncoli

Ugh I hate Yu's covers for this and Atlas. They just seem to take away from the inner quality. Shame too because he's not a bad artist.

Flippin' Moments: 6
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The Thing getting so riled up by a combination of Daken's hormonal scent schtick and sexual goading that he SMASHES DAKEN FACE FIRST INTO THE GROUND. Reed's reaction face and Daken's fucked up face combined make for one of the best panels of the week.

Art: The art is something that has managed to catch me by surprise, looking brilliant and well suited whilst being someone I've never heard of before. It's like a new learning curve. *looks up Camuncoli* Okay the internet isn't much good for looking the person up, so I'll just say it's brilliant and leave it at that. If I add anything solid to the actual art in this issue, I find it captivating to see both Daken and Lester (yeah it's so casual that he's nor just Bullseye for once) in their casual clothing. It's something we don't seem to get in comics anymore, or at least when we do it's far too uptight. You know, suits and the like. As such this is AWESOME.
Writing: Way has been leaving me cold on Deadpool (save the latest issue) so the fact that Dark Wolverine is a jump back to the quality he had on his Ghost Rider run is more than a little pleasing. Still perhaps this is just the influence of co-writer/adorable lawyer Marjorie Liu, who really is onto a winner here and will hopefully keep on bringing in the quality. I expect that she'll have made Dark Wolverine into one of the ten best Marvel titles by the end of the year.
Downsides: WE GET IT DAKEN'S BI ALREADY! That and the fact that I can't even figure out who he's playing and what his angle is. Too much ambiguity hurts my brain.
Rating: Buy It!

HALO: HELLJUMPER #1 (OF 5) by Peter David and Eric Nguyen

Flippin' Moments: 5
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The opening page. It's more atmospheric and interesting than the entire trilogy of Halo games (okay maybe not the first but shut up I'm on a train of thought). It could easily be a movie opening.)

Note: Someone pay Peter David to direct a Halo ODST film)

Art: The only thing I've seen of Nguyen before is his work on the Hulk vs. Hercules one-shot, so saying I see a progression in his artwork is a bit of a moot statement. I hear the dude's does work on the Heroes comics or whatever but the day I read one of those is the day I gouge out both my eyes and send them as a gift to my loved ones. The only way I can fault the art is to say that characters start to look the same after a while, but that's more because they're all identikit marine-looking types than a lack of artistic talent.
Writing: Peter David. He has become a greater character writer in his later years and it shows here, helping set apart our two protagonists from the pack (something that really needed to be done with how similar people look) and making us care about what happens to them. Quality throughout, though the pacing does suffer at a few points.
Downsides: I don't like Halo or its fanbase, but when I say it's awful nowadays it's no lie. This puts up a valiant effort to stand out against the Halo detriments. If this stands out it'll be a flippin' miracle. However in the face of general traits this will probably end up annoying me by the time issue 5 comes around.
Rating: Buy It!

IMMORTAL WEAPONS #01 (OF 5) by Jason Aaron, Duane Swierdydoodah, & More

Flippin' Moments: 15!
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: An eating contest between Fat Cobra and two GODS. AND COBRA WINS! Oh and it throws in a classic wenches line.

Art: Ohohohoho what a clever trick. Have Aja do the good old style white-space cover for the variant and I'll believe the art has gone back to being the perfect style suited to these kung-fu stories. Rather than deliver on the hope the cover placed in me it decided to have some artists that are competent yet bland as shit. This is an issue I had with later parts of Immortal Iron Fist and the fact that sort of mediocre art carried over fills me with sadness.
Writing: Jason Aaron writes Fat Cobra's past brilliantly, which isn't actually that hard considering how easy and fun the character is but I digress. This might well be the best handling of him yet, enhanced by this story being entirely about him and developing a character we've only seen the basics of till this point. Swierczynski's back-up story... Is pretty bad. A great moment with Iron Fist's hands on fire but that's pretty much it as points of interest go.
Downsides: The art, the fact that Swierczynski just can't write as well as his predecessors (something that I SHOULD stop attacking him over) and that's about it.
Rating: Buy It!

MS. MARVEL #42 by Brian Reed and Sana Takeda

Flippin' Moments: 5/6 (unsure about one)
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: A double page spread of the two Ms. Marvels facing off against each other. Beautiful and accompanied by some short but sweet words by Carol Danvers.

Art: Where have I heard that name before? Sana Takeda... Sounds like it'd connected to some minor contro- OH! The Heroes for Hire cover controversy! Whilst essentially an overblown thing about a very dodgy cover and the age rating of the comic (personally I find it unimportant) it brought some infamy to Heroes for Hire just prior to cancellation. We can only hope Takeda isn't here to do the same thing, for a world without Ms. Marvel is a sad one indeed, especially with art that's this amazing. The whole issue is basically combat so it's easy to see how well suited her art is to action. I don't know how well it holds up to standing around and talking but the faces are expressive enough and with poses this variable I can only assume it'd work out fine.
Writing: Ms. Marvel's writing has always been great. This hasn't changed. Even in an issue of just fighting it manages to fit in some brilliant lines. If a day comes where Brian Reed isn't writing this comic there will be a slight tinge of misery in the air of a select group of comic fans... Just sayin' is all.
Downsides: It IS just combat. Which is understandably limiting. Other than that it shares one trait with DC's Batman & Robin: you can't tell if you get your money's worth because it's over so soon.
Rating: Buy It! (I'm far too kind today...)

POWER GIRL #3 by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner

Flippin' Moments: 9
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Power Girl taking down The Humanite monkey bloke by throwing him into what I'm pretty sure is a massive vat of acid, and immediately realising how brutal what she's done is and doing what she can to help (mainly to try and save the entirety of.... wherever).

Art: Amanda Conner is another artist I know next to nothing about (I'm really not up on artists it seems) outside of the fact that her work on these first three issues of Power Girl are up there with some of the best comics about (with the exceptions of the truly amazing like Williams' Detective Comics work of course). I honestly think this is the sort of comic I could buy even with crappy writing if Conner sticks on the title.
Writing: Thankfully the writing is as great as the art. It has some slight blips on the route from beginning to end but as a complete package this is a thrilling conclusion to this small opening arc. If the next arc matches this in the slightest it could build itself up to being one of the best DC titles running at the present.
Downsides: .... Kinda felt like it solved the last issue's cliffhanger too easily.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

ALL NEW SAVAGE SHE-HULK #4 (OF 4) by Fred Van Lente, Peter Vale, Gabriel Guzman, Michael Ryan and Leonard Kirk

Flippin' Moments: 8
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The page where we get to see Lyra access her Gamma-Trance of calmness, wherein she is FUCKING AWESOME. This is one of the most kick-ass moments of the miniseries and a true sign that Van Lente can come up with cool ideas.

Art: I've beaten the too many cooks drum on comics before, but this might be the only time where that works out fine. The art for the main story (oh yeah, you get a back-up you lucky bastards) is brilliant from start to finish and supplies me with everything I could ask for (which as a ridiculous fan of the mini makes it more than acceptable for anyone else.. or something). The back-up story is drawn by Leonard Kirk, who is still being awesome off of the coattails of MI13. You get some brilliant stuff, particularly when Scorpion (the latest one) absorbs some symbiote matter and upgrades temporarily in a very pretty and awesome moment.
Writing: Fred Van Lente. Honestly if you heard me sticking my tongue up his arse any more you'd develop a fetish for the stuff, so all I'll say is that this rounds out the mini perfectly and leaves me desperately wanting for the Incredible Hulk back-up stories (the first of which I'll be reviewing this week as a delayed FTP text review. two issue 600s in one week would have been too much).
Downsides: None. Probably.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

NEW STYLE Quick-Fire Reviews: Week of 15th July Part 2

*sigh*

.... I suppose I SHOULD. After all once I'm caught up I can reward myself with something I actually WANT to do, like the FTP text review for the week, or editing that goddamn video review together. Still, I hate playing catch-up. I especially hate it when it's this week of the month, where EVERYTHING decides to come out... Well by that I mean last week and.. GAH I HATE THIS!

FRANKLIN RICHARDS SCHOOL'S OUT ONE SHOT by Chris Eliopoulos

Flippin' Moments (most comics have 5): 1
Spotlight Fli- oh just one okay then: Franklin Richards trying to stop the rain and only succeeding just before he has to go to dinner. Kinda funny.Art: It's okay, stylised. Like a poor man's Peanuts. A VERY poor man's Peanuts.
Writing: Humour's aimed at kids but I can't imagine them finding any of the strips funny outside of the one moment I've highlighted. Wow I just removed any need for anyone to buy this comic. Wow.
Downsides: IT'S REALLY FUCKING AWFUL! That's a pretty big downside.
Rating: FUCK IT!

LOCKJAW & THE PET AVENGERS #3 (OF 4) by Chris Eliopoulos and Ig Guara

Flippin' Moments: 10
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The immediate opening page, with the thrilling sight of the Pet Avengers falling out of the sky and Niels (Hairball) screaming his guts out with fear. Awesome.Art: Functional, goofy, suited to the writing. This is how art should be, fitting perfectly into the complete package and being perfect for its role.
Writing: Oh Eliopoulos CAN write! That doesn't explain Franklin Richards but still enough of me griping, let me just say that the writing here is stellar and full of brilliant laugh out loud moments. It's by no means flawless, having to establish how characters behave rapidly due to the constraints of a 4 issue miniseries, but we forgive those flaws in light of some of the best character interaction this side of Might Avengers.
Downsides: None that I can think of.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

MIGHTY AVENGERS #27 by Dan Slott, Christos Gage and Khoi Pham

Flippin' Moments: 8
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The big reveal of the Infinite Avengers Mansion, the coolest idea the avengers has had since... Well since Slott's Mighty Avengers line-up funnily enough.Art: Khoi Pham has returned, bringing with him the definitive Mighty Avengers art style that set us all up to fall in love with a title formerly plagued by tie-ins and over the top Bendis voice. Slott helped of course by being awesome but Pham is like the heart of Mighty, beating away under the surface, bringing with it emotion. MAINLY LOVE.
Writing: Slott is the champion of Avengers. Simple as. Gage has turned up for scripting this time and in true form he generally gets the same sort of quality shining through in his dialogue. However I do look forward to any point ahead where Slott handles all writing himself, as he is the true brain of Mighty, coming up with ideas and presenting them FLAWLESSLY. Gage does well filling in for the frontal lobe though so we can forgive this.
Downsides: Again, I want Slott's full brainpower on this.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

PUNISHER #7 by PEOPLE WHO AREN'T MATT FRACTION

Flippin' Moments: 3
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Punisher's new assisstant getting pissy... Yeah that's the best... Ya know what fuck it. I don't want to tell you how awful this is. It's just that bad. It's SO FUCKING AWFUL I'll just replace the review with an image of Molly from RUNAWAYS punching Frank in the stomach. That's what you get for not being as good as Matt Fraction. I'm not bitter.

Yeah. Take that.

SKRULL KILL KREW #3 (OF 5) by Adam Felber, Mark Robinson, Mike Getty and Rob Disalvo

Flippin' Moments: 9
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The resident racist of the SKK turns out to have regenerated himself as a black man. Hilarious moment and more than a little eye-catching, especially to readers of this series or the one before it.Art: Too many cooks aside, this is al perfectly functional, with the battle scenes carrying the requisite craziness that a book like Skrull Kill Krew really needs.
Writing: Awesome. Captivating even to non-fans, pleasing to fans, whilst not being confusing to the captivated non-fans. This is how comics should be.
Downsides: Too many cooks. Wolverine. Actually he's kinda cool in this and not Wolverine.
Rating: Flippin' BUY IT!

WAR OF KINGS WARRIORS #1 (OF 2) by Christos Gage, Mahmud A. Asrar and Carlos Magno

Flippin' Moments: Gladiator's story: 5. Blasaar's Story: 0
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: A ruthless headshot of sheer epic proportions that I'm too lazy to explain it. Hey look an image:

Yeah.

Art: Both stories have okay art, that's captivating whilst also being kinda boring in this age of detailed art that isn't that fun. That aside it's pretty and the colouring in Gladiator's story is pretty awesome.
Writing: Gage can't make Blastaar cool. He can make Gladiator epic though so we forgive him. Functional and pretty good for a couple of side-stories. Nothing to write home about.
Downsides: Bland, pointless, Blastaar sucks.
Rating: I DON'T CARE! (for the War of Kings collectors?)

X-FACTOR #46 by Peter David and Marco Santucci(?)

Flippin' Moments: 7
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Darwin doing his whole 'don't call me Armando' schtick. Never gets old. Especially as this time he's hitting Monet at the same time (and not in the way he'd prefer!).Art: Functional, and confusing. Mainly because It says De Landro on the cover and Marco Santucci inside. So I give up. It's X-Factor art, meaning the artist will be gone soon enough and replaced by someone else, making for inconsistencies and pain. Until then it's fine and actually pretty awesome.
Writing: Peter David may be a Liefeld antagoniser but that's not the reason I love reading his comics. No it's also because he writes great stories. This is no exception and a perfect step in the lead-up to the conclusion of this year long arc in issue 50.
Downsides: Any sense of a cliffhanger this issue is non-existant. Or lame. I can't tell.
Rating: Buy It!

NEW STYLE Quick-Fire Reviews: Week of 15th July Part 1

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH I DON'T WANNA! This new format is so much more efficient sure, but after having another sizable break from the site I kinda wanna put my fingers in my ears and ignore everything. But alas it cannot be that way, for I am trying to look remotely credible. As such we have new Quick-Fire Reviews, using a shrunken down version of the FTP text review format.

A lot of titles this week to run down too, so I REALLY wanna get this over with so I can focus on a Top Ten I've been putting my soul into. Oh and this is a PART 1! expect part two on thursday and this week's quick-fire reviews on saturday as normal.

READ IT REALLY FAST LIKE A GUN BANG BANG VROOOOOOOM!

AGENTS OF ATLAS #8 by Jeff Parker and Carlo Pagulayan

Flippin' Moments (most comics have 5): 6-7
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Ken Hale punishing bad dudes with a high-powered rifle. Badass. Like a hairy Punisher.Art: Amazing as usual for AoA, with only the Leinil Francis Yu cover breaking the overall quality.
Writing: Parker has handled the Agents for some time and this issue just proves that he's the only person who can do such a thing. The Hulk is a cop-out insertion into any comic though, even HULK, so it loses points for that.
Downsides: Yu's cover! Hulk fucks up comics whenever he cameos! Recap page not as funny as usual!
Rating: BUY!

ALL SELECT COMICS 70TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ONE-SHOT by Marc Guggenheim, Javier Pulido and Michael Kupperman

Flippin' Moments: HARD TO DEFINE IT'S ALL PRETTY AWESOME AS A PACKAGE.
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: MARVEX BEING GIVEN $20 DOLLARS BY THE MAYOR! SILLY MAYOR YOU'RE THE MAYOR. YOU HAVE MORE THAN 20 DOLLARS! IN FACT ALL OF MARVEX IS WORTH SPOTLIGHTING BUT THAT WOULD BE EXCESSIVE! SORRY I'M ON CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOOOOL!Art: Holy shit this is awesome. Feels nostalgic and draws you in. The real winner here though is Marvex, which might just be the best drawn one-shot ever. Just for letting us see some crazy things.
Writing: Guggenheim's writing is stellar in the first portion, proving that typewriter font text boxes are great story-telling devices. Marvex wins the day again by being REALLY goofy. Heck even the real old stories they include in the one-shot are hilarious and brilliantly written.
Downsides: We'll never get more of this again. I think.
Rating: FLIPPIN' BUY!

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #599 by Joe Kelly, Stephen Segovia, Marco Checchetto, Paolo Siqueira and Amilton Santos (FUCK THAT'S A LOT OF ARTISTS)

Flippin' Moments: 7
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Harry leaving the American Son armour at his defeated father's feet. Beefcake for the ladies AND a great moment of maturity for the character.Art: Schizophrenic at best. Having a lot of artists handle different pages makes for a bag that at a glance is mixed and upon closer detail is FUCKED. Looks good at the end with Harry and his shakes.
Writing: Joe Kelly did good, though the only real aftermath is Menace looking retarded and BEING retarded, with Harry getting some sorta strange shaking after-effect from dropping outta the American Son program. In fact that last part is interesting as hell, so consider that a shining moment of writing.
Downsides: The art, Menace, Norman Osborn reliving his past of sleeping with other people's love interests... A decent amount of things.
Rating: Read It?

BETA RAY BILL: GODHUNTER #2 (of 3) by Kieron Gillen and KANO

Flippin' Moments: 6
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: The pictures in the little alien's speech bubbles accompanied by hand gestures. They're adorable and grab you from the off. I want one of those aliens.Art: Functional and suits the characters. Silver Surfer looks the best he has in forever andd Bill truly cuts an imposing figure across the page, even in his torment on the last pages.
Writing: Gillen is doing this well, delving into the characters swiftly and fleshing them out and Bill's quest is truly emotional and riveting but this all seems like it should be an epic, not a 3 issue mini series!
Downsides: Rushes through plot a bit much, can get confusing and will probably all be pointless in the end.
Rating: Read It?

BLACKEST NIGHT REVIEW REMOVED FOR A LATER DATE. INSTEAD OF GETTING THE REVIEW YOU'LL JUST GET THIS NEEDLESS BLOCKQUOTE OF ME... WAIT WHY IS THIS A BLOCKQUOTE? OH WELL SAME THING APPLIES TO TALES OF THE CORPS!

CAPTAIN AMERICA #601 by Ed Brubaker and Gene "The Dean" Colan

Flippin' Moments: Hard to say. It's kinda weak moments-wise.
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: None, but here's a very pretty piece of art:

See how pretty it is?

Art: "The Dean" is a comics legend and this art demonstrates why. It's all very pretty yet grim and carries a very nostalgic feel. Heck they released this issue in black and white as well to emphasise this. I... Think it's OKAY compared to the art we get nowadays, but it really is just a nostalgia boost.
Writing: Brubaker is usually a very strong writer. This issue is kinda weak, mainly because it's just there to fill time whilst Reborn is going on (though I'm assured that CapAm won't be back till after Reborn concludes).
Downsides: Bland, hard to pay attention to, Nick Fury in full classic SHIELD garb confuses me... It's just full of little things that pull me away and stop caring.
Rating: I Don't Care!

DARK AVENGERS #7 by Matt Fraction and Luke Ross

Flippin' Moments: 6
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Emma Frost staring at Xavier (who she can't see) and saying that everything will work out for the best. Potent, reassuring, yet ridiculously foreboding.Art: Does the job. I prefer the art the previous two parts of Utopia had but beggars can't be choosers. Emma Frost's diamond form is still fantastic and that's the main thing to take from this.
Writing: Mediocre compared to Fraction's X-Men chapter of this and lacking anything that brilliant outside of the interactions between Xavier, Beast or Emma Frost. On the note of Beast is Fraction de-powering him? If so HOLY CRAP!
Downsides: SUNSPOT. He's off in New Mutants. Can't we not throw him in as a background character to this event. Like really minor one. Kinda makes it awkward to figure out when New Mutants is happening. Also bored of Osborn now, Dark Beast isn't used to his full potential, Hellion is a character I hate so I have no want for him to succeed and the pace of the event has felt slowed this issue.
Rating: I Don't Care! (though if you're in for the event get it)

DARK REIGN: MR NEGATIVE #2 by Fred Van Lente and Gianluca Gugliotta

Flippin' Moments: 11! FUCKING HELL!
Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Hard choice between them all, but let's say Nega-Spidey saying who's next after taking out the Hood's men (and woman).Art: I love the art to this. Much like Power Girl the art seems to reek of fun, sticking to looking entertaining and captivating rather than like some sort of deep and detailed art piece (the sort of art I'm getting sick of). Hammerhead and Mr. Negative look the best of the bunch and what little of the hauntingly captivating White Rabbit we see is still amazing. Hats off to Gugliotta.
Writing: VAN LENTE! VAN LENTE! VAN FUCKING LENTE! Lord of the Dark Reign miniseries!

DEADPOOL #12 by Daniel Way and Paco Medina

Spotlight Flippin' Moment: Kid Bullseye shooting his imaginary teacher in an 80s movie style flashback saying 'FUCK YOU MRS BOLTON! I hate you.'. Awesome moment.Art: Looks pretty good. Not much to say one way or the other. Sticks to my whole 'look fun not grimy' want at the moment.
Writing: I'm fed up of those fucking boxes. Used to just be a great extension of Deadpool's thoughts. Now they're a seperate entity he converses with. Multiple ones in fact. Fuck them. Other than that good writing.
Downsides: This is the first time Deadpool has really been funny since Way's run began. It won't stick and it's not a very satisfying conclusion to Deadpool's attempts to get his own back at Osborn. Not that any of that has been satisfying.
